Believer in the power of conversation.

I was born in Korea, raised in America, and I came back to South Korea with one mission — to give the next generation something my family once crossed an ocean to find.

저는 한국에서 태어나 미국에서 자랐습니다. 그리고 다음 세대에게, 우리 가족이 바다를 건너 찾았던 그것을 전해주기 위해 돌아왔습니다.

Where this all started · 시작 이야기

My parents left Korea
for a brighter future.
I came back to bring
that future home.

When I was a young boy, my parents immigrated to the United States — the way so many families do, with big hopes and small certainties. Growing up as a Korean-American, I lived between two worlds and two languages. English wasn't just a subject I studied. It was the key that unlocked every room I walked into.

I watched what confidence in English could do for a person. The opportunities it opened. The friendships it built. The sense of belonging it created. And when I moved back to South Korea as a U.S. citizen, I saw the gap clearly — a generation of incredibly smart, hardworking students who had studied English for over a decade, and still froze the moment they needed to use it.

That's when WAYVE began — not as a business idea, but as a calling.

어렸을 때 부모님은 더 나은 미래를 위해 미국으로 이민을 가셨습니다. 영어는 단순한 과목이 아니었습니다. 모든 문을 열어주는 열쇠였습니다. 저는 그 열쇠를 한국의 다음 세대에게 건네주기 위해 돌아왔습니다. 10년 넘게 영어를 공부했지만, 정작 말해야 할 순간 얼어버리는 학생들을 보며 WAYVE를 시작하게 되었습니다.

Earlier this year, I took my 19-year-old cousin Yeeun on a trip to the United States. Before we left, she had zero confidence in her English. She'd studied it for years — but like so many Korean students, speaking felt impossible.

As I introduced Yeeun to my friends across the country, something unexpected happened. They didn't see her limitations — they saw her. They encouraged her. They welcomed her. And with every new friendship, her confidence grew.

By the halfway point of the trip, she turned to me and said something I'll never forget:

"Toms, please only speak to me in English."

That moment changed everything for me. It wasn't grammar that unlocked her confidence. It wasn't a test score. It was relationship. It was being seen, encouraged, and welcomed into real conversation by real people who genuinely cared about her.

That is what WAYVE is built on. Not a curriculum. A community. Not a classroom. A connection.

올해 초, 저는 19살 사촌 예은이를 데리고 미국 여행을 떠났습니다. 떠나기 전까지 예은이는 영어에 전혀 자신이 없었습니다. 그런데 제 친구들을 만나면서 그녀는 변하기 시작했습니다. 여행의 중반쯤, 예은이는 저에게 이렇게 말했습니다. "오빠, 이제 나한테 영어로만 말해줘." 그 순간이 모든 것을 바꿨습니다. 그녀의 자신감을 열어준 것은 문법도, 시험 점수도 아니었습니다. 진짜 사람과 나눈 진짜 관계였습니다.

Every WAYVE session is a live, 90-minute conversation on Zoom. No slides. No tests. No pressure. Just you, 1–2 other students at your level, and a native English speaker guiding real conversation.

What if I miss a session?
Because sessions are live group conversations, missed sessions cannot be made up. However, if all group members agree, the session can be rescheduled to another time that week.
세션은 그룹 라이브 대화이기 때문에 결석한 세션은 보충이 불가합니다. 단, 모든 그룹원이 동의하면 같은 주 다른 시간으로 일정을 변경할 수 있습니다.
Is there homework?
No mandatory homework. Everything outside of sessions is completely voluntary. That said, the more you engage — in the KakaoTalk chat or on your own — the faster your confidence will grow.
필수 숙제는 없습니다. 세션 외 모든 활동은 완전히 자유입니다. 하지만 카카오톡 채팅 등에서 더 많이 참여할수록 자신감은 더 빠르게 성장합니다.

How are groups matched?
Groups are matched by age and English level so everyone feels comfortable speaking. You will never be placed with someone significantly above or below your level.
